Fashion in the United States maintains its momentum through September. In the ninth month of the year, fashion sales have recorded, for the second consecutive month, a rise of 8% year-on-year, according to data published by the U.S. Bureau of Commerce. In total, fashion retail sales in the country stood at $24 billion at the end of September.
September’s growth is in line with that recorded by the sector in August and July, when U.S. fashion retail sales rose by another 8% and 7.6%, respectively. In absolute terms, sales rose by $1.76 billion compared to September of the previous year.
The good performance of fashion retailing in the country in recent months has further boosted the annual cumulative figure. Through September, fashion sales in the United States totaled $221.72 billion, 5.2% more than in the first nine months of the previous year.

The positive evolution of fashion is also above that recorded by the U.S. retail trade as a whole, both in September and for the year as a whole. At the end of the ninth month of the year, retail sales in the United States rose by 5.68% to $708.95 billion, while in the first nine months they are up 4% to $6.4 trillion.
Fashion sales did suffer in month-on-month terms, up 15.2%. Specifically, data from the U.S. Bureau of Commerce point to a drop in the sector’s turnover of up to $4.31 billion between September and August. The fall contrasts with that recorded by the sector the previous month, when fashion retail sales turnover also accelerated month-on-month, by 5.9%.
The end of the summer period, together with the approach of the sales and discount seasons at the end of the year, tend to affect retail consumption in both September and October.
