The Portuguese group Altri, dedicated to the production of cellulosic-based fibers, continues its incursion into the textile sector with the recent acquisition of AeoniQ, from the HeiQ group, specialized in the production of sustainable cellulosic yarn. If the transaction meets the necessary legal conditions, the acquisition process will be completed before the end of 2025.

This is a further step in Altri’s diversification strategy, as it seeks to expand the use of its fibers beyond its traditional market, paper and wood, and into fashion. The company has developed a proprietary technology capable of manufacturing yarns with technical properties similar to synthetic fibers in terms of elasticity and strength, but with a lower environmental impact.

As part of the agreement, AeoniQ’s first industrial plant will be built at Altri’s facilities in Constância (Portugal) under the Caima brand. The plant will have an initial capacity of 1,750 tons per year and will be operational from the end of 2026.

Along with Altri, Hugo Boss and Mas Holdings (a South Asian technical apparel producer) have also participated as investors, while The Lycra Company has acquired the exclusive global distribution rights for AeoniQ.Companies such as Riopele, Impetus, Beste, Taiana, Feinjersey and Aunde Group are also actively involved in the technical and commercial validation of the new material.

The Portuguese company’s commitment to the production of sustainable textile fiber comes in the midst of the controversial project to build a fiber production plant from eucalyptus wood, intended exclusively for the textile industry value chain, in Palais de Rei (Lugo). Altri will produce a total of 440,000 metric tons of cellulose-based fiber at the plant, known as the Gama Project, of which 250,000 metric tons of soluble fiber will be destined for the textile chain .

This year, Altri increased its revenues by 8.5% compared to 2023. Its turnover amounted to €855.3 million, thanks to the increase in average pulp prices, its main market.
