Trump Eyes Tariff Hike: 10%-15% on Goods from Over 150 Nations
The U.S. president says he will send a payment notice to these economies, which “are not large and do not do much business”, he said. The percentage to be applied to them has not yet been decided.
President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that he will send letters to more than 150 countries notifying them of the imposition of tariffs on their exported products that could be 10% or 15%.
“We are going to send a payment notice to more than 150 countries, and that notice will indicate what the tariff rate will be. It will be the same for everybody, for that group,“ he has pointed out in statements to the press from the White House, adding that these countries “are not big and do not do a lot of business.“
The U.S. president indicated during an interview granted later to Real America’s Voice television network that this tax “will probably be 10% or 15%, we have not decided yet”.
In recent days, Trump has sent a series of letters informing other economies of the imposition of new tariffs on their products as of August 1, thus extending the initial deadline of July 9, in the absence of complying with Washington’s demands or reaching trade agreements, although the letters, disseminated on Truth Social, are presented as “agreements”.
Asked about negotiations with the European Union, which faces a 30 percent increase on tariffs already imposed by Washington on its products, the White House tenant has considered that “we could reach an agreement with Europe” while showing apparent indifference. “You know, I just don’t care,“ he assured.
Despite this, the president said that “the EU has been brutal, and now they’re being very nice. They want to reach an agreement, and it will be very different from the agreement we’ve had for years.“
