Tariff moves continue. The Mexican government plans to raise tariffs on Chinese imports in cars, textiles and plastics as part of its 2026 budget proposal, and will present a draft next September 8th, as encouraged by President Donald Trump.

This move comes in response to the demand raised by U.S. President Donald Trump, where he encourages Mexican officials to impose a higher tariff measure on Chinese products, as the United States has done.

Trump imposed a 30% tariff on products from Mexico last July, to which are added fees pertaining to each economic sector. “Goods that evade the higher tariffs will be subject to a higher tariff. As you are already aware, there will be no tariffs if Mexico or your country’s companies choose to build or manufacture products within the United States and, in fact, we will do everything we can to get it passed quickly, professionally and routinely in a matter of weeks,“ the president posited.

Mexico received one of the highest tariff rates in response to the “fentanyl crisis,“ which Trump considers “caused in part by Mexico’s failure to stop the cartels, made up of the most despicable people to ever set foot on Earth.“

Mexico and the United States are on the verge of finalizing an agreement to combat drug trafficking and violence in both countries.

“Goods that evade higher tariffs will be subject to a higher tariff. As you are already aware, there will be no tariffs if Mexico or your country’s companies choose to build or manufacture products inside the United States , and in fact, we will do everything we can to get it passed quickly, professionally and routinely in a matter of weeks,“ Trump laid out just a month ago.
