Inside ‘Marc by Sofia’: A Glimpse into the Creative World of Marc Jacobs
Sofia Coppola takes her first step into documentary filmmaking with an intimate portrait of designer Marc Jacobs, exploring his life and artistry through the lens of their enduring friendship, set to premiere from New York to Venice.
Marc Jacobs inspires Sofia Coppola in his first documentary. The friendship between designer and director already materialized years ago in their multiple collaborations in the designer’s campaigns.
The Venice International Film Festival has been the venue chosen to present the documentary Marc by Sofia as part of the out-of-competition selection of the event, which will take place from August 27 to September 6.
In 2002, Marc Jacobs launched a perfume called Sofia, inspired by the director. Now Coppola will present Marc by Sofia, the director’s first documentary on the life and work of her friend. A ninety-seven-minute journey through all of Jacobs’ work, including long-awaited archival footage that will be released for the first time.
Marc Jacobs to be Sofia Coppola’s muse in her first documentary
The most anticipated is the one about the 1994 guerrilla-style fashion show where Coppola and Spike Jonze organized a Marc Jacobs show for the X-girl brand in New York by Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon and stylist Daisy Von Furth.
Sofia Coppola’s latest project will accompany other out-of-competition documentaries, such as Broken English, dedicated to the late Marianne Faithfull. Both were unveiled last Tuesday, when the festival organizers published the complete program of the 82nd edition.
Sofia Coppola has also participated this year in the Marie Antoinette Style exhibition that will take place from September 20th in the United Kingdom. The Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) will present a retrospective dedicated to the figure of the French queen and her impact on fashion and the decorative arts from the 18th century to the present day, incorporating designs created for the cinema, such as those Coppola used for her film Marie Antoinette, which won an Oscar for best costumes.
