TJ Maxx chooses Barcelona to start operating in Spain. The American group TJX, whose emblems are TJ Maxx and TK Maxx, arrives in the country with the opening of its first store in the Diagonal Mar shopping center. The giant, whose value proposition is based on low prices, ended its last fiscal year with revenues of $56.36 billion, 4% more than last year.

With an outlet format, the store will have an area of 2,168 square meters, making it one of the largest operators in the Barcelona complex, where Primark is also located.

Last year, the company hired Joanna Joyce, from the real estate consulting firm Cushman & Wakefield, as head of expansion in Europe, with its sights set on Spain. TJX has been looking to enter the Spanish market for more than two years, without finding an ideal location for its business model.

TJX is one of the international giants in the discount segment, with stores specializing in fashion and household goods. In Europe, the company operates the TK Maxx and Homesense brands, while in the rest of the world it operates Marshalls, Winners, TJ Maxx, Home Goods, Sierra Trading Post and Trade Secret.

Globally, TJX had 5,085 outlets at the end of its last fiscal year, 2025, most of which were located in the United States. In Europe, TK Maxx closed its last fiscal year with 655 outlets and Homesense with 85.

The company specializes in offering fashion and household goods of relevant brands at discounts ranging from 20% to 60%. The group began its development in 1976, when Bernard Cammarata, then general merchandising manager of Marshalls, was recruited by discounter Zayre to develop a new chain selling discounted fashion and home goods. In 1977, TJ Maxx opened its first store.

TJX began its European rollout in 1994 through the United Kingdom and Ireland. In 2007 it launched its first stores in Germany and in 2009 in Poland, before expanding into Austria and the Netherlands in 2015.
