Turkey studies safeguard measures to stop nylon imports

Turkey focuses on nylon thread imports. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s government has initiated an investigation to determine if the increase of nylon thread imports into the country is harming local producers.

The Turkish authorities have already notified the World Trade Organization (WTO) that, on 30 December 2018, they initiated a safeguard investigation on purchases of nylon.

A member of the WTO can take a safeguard measure, with which it restricts imports of a product, temporary, with the objective of establishing if the increase of imports is affecting local industry.

Nylon thread is inside the list of products that enter Turkey with reduced tariffs. According to Erdoğan’s government, the imports of the product that is undergoing the investigation have rose in absolute terms, which deteriorated the situation of the domestic industry.
