BCI cotton will be one third of world production by 2020

The demand for BCI cotton boosts. Sustainability is gaining space in the fashion business and there are other raw materials that are taking over. This is the case of cotton from the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) platform, which in the last campaign 2017-2018 accounted for 19% of the total production and is expected to reach a third of the total by 2020.

According to the data from the BCI 2018 Annual Report, last season this platform brought together two million farmers and added 5.1 million metric tons. In relation to the previous campaign, the production of this type of cotton grew by 50%, after increasing in all countries where it is present, even duplicating in India, Pakistan, South Africa and the United States.

In India, for example, BCI production went from 325,000 tons in 2016-2017 to 572,000 tons in 2017-2018. In the United States, the platform already includes 360 farmers who produced a total of 245,000 tons in 2017-2018, 5% of all the country's cotton.

BCI is a non-profit organization to promote standards in good practices in cotton crops. It is not organic cotton, but it is considered a preferred fiber and a more sustainable crop than the conventional one. They are part of the giants agrupation of the sector, as well as H & M, Gap or Levi Strauss, among others.
